In your response of at least 15 lines, please address the following:
*What is the deeper meaning of these lines? (Don’t focus on summary – we know what happened. We want to know what you think about it.)
*What did these lines help you understand in a general sense (about yourself, about life, about …)?
*What connections or parallels do you see between these lines and something else in your life (another class, different book, a movie, a personal experience, etc.)?
Choose one of the quotations below:
“I’ve thought about these moments over and over. I should have found something to say. I could have just denied it, though Tommy probably wouldn’t have believed me. And to try to explain the thing truthfully would have been too complicated . . . And I can recall ow, as fresh as anything, Tommy’s own face, the anger receding for the moment, being replaced by an expression almost of wonder, like I was a rare butterfly he’d come across on a fence-post” (195).
“It never occurred to me that our lives, until then so closely interwoven, could unravel and separate over a thing like that. But the fact was, I suppose, there were powerful tides tugging us apart by then, and it only needed something like that to finish the task. If we’d understood that back then — who knows? — maybe we’d have kept a tighter hold of one another” (197).
